Although I have failed to keep on this - THAT ENDS NOW. Here I am, in Denver Colorado, typing away on my friend Dylan's porch. I got in at 11:15 last night on a slightly delayed flight and my dear sweet cousin Matt Gaillet picked me up at the airport. He drove us to Dylan's house, and there is really not much more to say, as we immediately figured out our sleeping accommodations and went to bed. I think that this entry will be a brief synopsis of what we have both been up to as of late in our own little lives.
Matt just spent an entire month in Paris, France, and he is seemingly changed forever by this experience. He says, "don't go to Paris if you still want to like your life in America when you return". His goal is to move there as soon as possible and work in the film/photography industry and traipse the cobbled streets drinking wine and eating fresh baguettes. Before this magical adventure he was living his LA life in Echo Park in his cottage above Echo Lake. As far as I know, he works sporadic long days on either building movie sets, assisting/running photoshoots, or whatever else he is hired to do involving cameras. He surfs when he feels like driving through the traffic all the way to the beach and back, and he recently started a photography studio with some of his best friends called - "Color Color Studio". It seems very cool and you should definitely check it out!!
I was just on a week-long tour with friends Oshima Brothers, and Dave Kelly accompanying me on drums. This was our first time touring as a duo, and it worked very nicely. One of the more complicated parts of touring is finding a place to sleep each night that isn't going to break the bank. I am lucky to know people in a lot of places, so this is usually not a problem, but it is understandably pretty uncommon for someone to be able to comfortably host 4 people. But when it is two of us (especially when you share a bed) it becomes much easier. Dave also built a small bed in the back of the van in case we needed it. We only used it once, and got put up in hotels by the venues or were hosted by lovely friends and family. So although we missed having Dan on guitar or Zach or Matt Gaydar on bass, this was the most comfortable & profitable tour. Before that we were living in our sweet little home in Warren, Maine. I released my album almost 3 months ago, so other than going through an artistic existential crisis, I've been working as a server at Long Grain in Camden, hanging out by the lake with friends and family, sailing on Dave's epic wooden boat out to Greens Island (and learning how to not be scared when it keels over) and tending to my charming gardens (whilst fending off a cute & conniving groundhog). Life has been good to me in Maine, and I will miss it these next few weeks, but I am thrilled and a little jittery to be out on the road again!
This is going to be a hard and slightly complicated tour, but I am overjoyed to play music with Matt again. For those who don't know, Matt and I had a band called Dyado long ago, and we toured across the US many a time as a duo. We were dirtbags about it all, mostly camping on beaches and free campsites and playing house shows and bars, anywhere that would take us really, just to get some $$ and food and make some friends along the way. Somehow we did forge many connections through consistently doing this, and my music community is so much larger and spread out today because of it. We are obviously a little older and wiser now.. with maybe a little less energy than we once had for socializing at all hours of the day.. but these shows will also be a huge step up than what we were playing back then. These stages are big, and Blitzen Trapper has a good fan base that I hope we can entertain with our harmonies and silly little cousin banter each night. Matt also says he sucks at music now but I simply do not believe him!!! Also, we are staying with our friend Dylan at the moment, who used to sporadically tour with us playing drums. I haven't seen him in 4 years, but after giving him a squeeze this morning it feels like only yesterday!
